Thanks for this, Liz - good job!

I don't do Fb and looking at this I don't think I'll be bothering with G+ either. Guess the next thing to look out for will be Fb search ...

You missed one downside which is that people who use Google Apps domain based are not included. Whilst you can use your personal accounts it is a real faff around when using the normal browser.

Works great from my Android Tablet though (but so do Facebook and Twitter!)

Spot on, Foxy - really well written post about a topic most businesses still do poorly or not at all.

For us, email marketing is about making that initial contact with the prospective customer. It's not spam and we work hard to avoid the junk folder.

No question, though, if we get it right it can really take the cold out of cold calling.

I think another big mistake businesses make is not to drill down to a niche. Most small businesses try to market to anyone and everyone and will literally take any client that comes their way and I personally think that's a massive reason lots of SMEs aren't doing too well or struggling to get better/bigger clients.

As they say, 'anybody is nobody' so be really specific about who your target market is and cater directly to them rather than trying to please everyone :)

Nice post, Liz. I agree email marketing must be done using a strategy rather than just blasting out emails for the sake of it.

For me, email marketing is all about building a community and for my subscribers to get to me know better, and vice versa so I always invite replies or have some sort of call to action in my newsletters to ensure people actually do something rather than just delete the email once they've read it.

There are lots of tools small businesses can use for better email marketing such as Aweber, Constant Contact, Mailchimp, InfusionSoft and many more affordable products.

Great info. Im currently using post but its costing a fortune. The letter can also just be thrown in the bin just like the emails could be treated as spam and deleted. Could you give any tips on email marketing? I would prefer this but dont want to damage my nameand want to ensure its passed on to the the person that needs to be reading it.
Thx,
Ant

Apparently the Anglo Saxons called February 'Sol-monath' (cake-month), because cakes were offered to the gods during the month. That seems like a fantastic excuse to eat lots of cake during Feb :D
